Surgical precision meets encyclopedic knowledge whenever Steve Stein aka Steinski hits the decks. Introduced to the world alongside Double Dee in 1985 with “The Payoff Mix,” Steinski’s innovative “cut and paste” style left its mark on everyone—from the legendary Coldcut, to recent mashup artists and Girl Talk.

Traxx- Influenced by Ron Hardy, Farley JmF, Liaisons Dangereuses, 808 State, Phuture the drippy experimental counterpoint basslines of the 303 and similar squelch style step-seq arpeggiations, trax of the 80's-90's sound (only the jackingest variety), interestingly juxtaposed and sometimes nonmusical hypnotic cycle phrases in dance music. The Composer and Recording Artist, Traxx calls combinations of these elements "the kode". This musical code can be found in many styles of dance and ritual music and is a crucial element in the sound.

FFM (live)

It took several years and a few hundred shades of eyeliner for FFM to pout its way into their current state of electro bliss. Accented by a love for parka hoods, bicycle helmets and loads of red lipstick, the three-piece, live electro house outfit delivers the kind of sharp sound that cuts glass on the floor. In 2007, the band formerly known as Sombionx retooled its production game, assuming a dirtier moniker to match its grittier, electro-based sound.
Helmed by musician/producer Adam Nelson, (aka. producer Sombionx), FFM's point-and-shoot tracks have the feel of a West Coast rock repertoire, boasting equal parts irreverence and shine. Bassist and synth key stylist Michaela White (aka. Miss Michaela) melds her classically-trained musical upbringing with the same raw electro moxie that earned her Chicago fame as a DJ and producer. Front woman Lindsay Frkovich lends her guitar work and sassily stilted vocals to square off a geometric sound that hits as sharply as her platform heels.
FFM emerges to put a shinier spin on the grit-and-bones of the electro house scene. Forthcoming digital releases on their own Q Studios label include cheeky stunners, such as "I Like House Music," and the breathy intensity of the "Time Bomb" EP, which includes a dark party gem remixed by Mastiksoul.

Arthur Baker

Arthur Baker was among the most visible and widely imitated of the early hip-hop producers, masterminding breakthrough experiments with tape edits and synthetic beats before crossing over to introduce the art of remixing into the pop mainstream. Baker's gradual absorption into the pop mainstream continued in 1983, when the cutting-edge British dance group New Order contacted him to produce their single "Confusion"; the record became an immediate club classic, even scraping into the American R&B charts. Remixes of the track also helped pioneer the remix aesthetic throughout the rock mainstream, and soon Baker was producing material for Naked Eyes, Face to Face, Diana Ross, Jeff Beck, and others. In 1989, he also assembled artists including Al Green, ABC, and Jimmy Somerville to record the all-star LP Merge, credited to Arthur Baker & the Backbeat Disciples.

Glass Candy (live)

Glass Candy is one of those bands where part of their appeal is that their work is difficult to find in hard copy form (thank goodness we live in the electronic age; search under Glass Candy, or Glass Candy & the Shattered Theatre and you’re bound to get somewhere). Based on their aesthetically-pleasing photos, graphic effects, and overall sound quality I’d love to know what alternative universe they’ve stepped into and where I can find the portal. One part Blondie and two-parts mellow club mix, the Portland, OR duo is far from a dime a dozen but are on enough of a comfort level and cool factor that they can be effortlessly allowed into one’s playlist/vinyl library with the slightest of hesitation, if any at all.
